Datang sebagai lele introduksi dari Taiwan pada 1984, produktivitas lele dumbo kini terus merosot. Saat pertama kali dibudidayakan, peternak di tanahair bersukacita lantaran ukuran konsumsi 10-15 ekor/kg didapat lewat budidaya selama 70 hari. Belakangan untuk mencapai ukuran serupa waktunya molor hingga 100 hari. Perkawinan sedarah-inbreeding-ditengarai menjadi pemicu rendahnya laju pertumbuhan. ‘Banyak peternak mengeluh, padahal pasar lele sedang bagus,’ kata Mohamad Sambas, pengelola kawasan Minapolitan Lele di Desa Kracak, Leuwiliang, Kabupaten Bogor.

Sebab itu sangkuriang menjadi sandaran baru. Tumbuhnya pesat. ‘Dua kali lebih cepat daripada dumbo,’ kata Yanto Herman Wijaya, peternak di Desa Citelang, Kotamadya Sukabumi. Tengoklah ukuran 10-15 ekor/kg dicapai setelah bibit berukuran 5-7 cm dipelihara selama 49-51 hari. Tingkat kematian selama pembesaran juga kecil, kurang dari 10%; dumbo 20%. Pantas Yanto tak ragu mengganti semua dumbo dengan sangkuriang di petak-petak kolamnya yang total seluas 1 ha. ‘Omzetnya tetap, tapi perolehan rupiah lebih cepat 1,5 bulan,’ kata Yanto yang beromzet Rp30-juta/bulan itu.

Adalah Balai Besar Pengembangan Budidaya Air Tawar (BBPBAT) Sukabumi yang membidani kelahiran sangkuriang. Lele berkulit kelabu itu diperoleh dari silangan jantan dumbo generasi ke-6 (F6) dari Majalaya, Jawa Barat, dengan induk betina generasi ke-2 (F2). Jantan F6 dipilih berbobot 0,5-0,75 kg dengan panjang 30-35 cm. Betina F2 bobotnya 0,7-1 kg sepanjang 25-30 cm. Hasil anakan jantan kemudian diseleksi dan dikawinkan kembali dengan betina F2. ‘Sangkuriang diperoleh setelah 4 tahun penyilangan,’ kata Sambas yang juga peneliti lele dari BBPBAT itu.

Sifat genetik dumbo memang memungkinkan diperbaiki. Fekunditas misalnya, setelah diperbaiki lahir sangkuriang yang mencapai 60.000-80.000 telur/kg bobot induk; dumbo 30.000-50.000. Ini artinya jumlah produksi bibit sangkuriang berlipat dua. Kelangsungan hidup larva juga meningkat 90-95%; dumbo 50-60%. Keunggulan lain, sangkuriang memiliki FCR 0,8. Artinya untuk menghasilkan 1 kg daging dibutuhkan 0,8 kg pakan. Bandingkan dengan FCR dumbo yang lebih dari 1.

Soal daya tahan, sangkuriang mampu meredam serangan bakteri Trichodina sp, Aeromonas hydrophilla, dan Ichthyopthirius sp. Padahal penyakit itu ditakuti peternak karena membuat kulit lele melepuh. Buktinya, ‘Saat kolam berisi dumbo banyak mati, sangkuriang di kolam lain tetap sehat,’ kata Yanto. Apalagi bila sanitasi lingkungan diperhatikan, dijamin penyakit-penyakit itu sulit mewabah.

Dengan kelebihan-kelebihan itu sangkuriang direkomendasikan untuk dipelihara. ‘Sangkuriang sangat cocok dibudidayakan untuk skala komersial,’ ujar Dr Ir Lenny S Syafei MS, direktur Usaha dan Budidaya Direktorat Jenderal Perikanan Budidaya DKP saat dijumpai Trubus di sela-sela acara Gerakan Tanam, Tebar, dan Pelihara di Bogor, November 2008 silam.

Banyak keunggulan bukan berarti sangkuriang mudah didapat. Ketersediaan bibit terbatas lantaran calon induk sulit diperoleh. Pengalaman Yanto yang juga pembibit, sulit mendapat betina F2 dan jantan F6 dumbo berkualitas. Makanya, ‘Produksi bibit baru mencapai 100.000-400.000 ekor per bulan,’ katanya. Jumlah itu hanya cukup untuk memenuhi kebutuhan sendiri, belum dapat dijual pada peternak lain. ‘Idealnya produksi bibit saya sekitar 1-juta/bulan,’ katanya.

Untuk mengatasi kelangkaan bibit lele yang telah dilepas menjadi varietas unggulan nasional itu BBPBAT sudah menyebar indukan ke beberapa Unit Pembenihan Rakyat dan Balai Benih Ikan di Jawa Barat, Jawa Tengah, Yogyakarta, Jawa Timur, dan Lampung. Beberapa pembibit swasta bersertifikat pun mulai menyediakan bibit sangkuriang. Bibit ukuran 2-3 cm dijual Rp35-Rp40/ekor; 3-5 cm Rp70-Rp75/ekor; dan 5-7 cm Rp115/ekor. Diharapkan tahun depan lele-lele sangkurianglah yang memenuhi kebutuhan warung-warung pecel lele di setiap penjuru kota.
